Just SEO? That comment tickled me no end. Local business online visibility is more than "just SEO" because often you are working with businesses who often have no website of their own initially and are quite skeptical about the whole thing. Often they have been burnt by companies offering to get them to the top of Google and charging a small fortune for a PPC campaign, or worse by certain directories who offer business pages that are keyword spammed, charged monthly for but don't actually do anything for the business.

Of course there are companies that specialise in "just SEO" but from my talks with small business owners, firstly they have no idea what SEO is and secondly they like to talk with people who take the time to explain the whys and jargon. It's horses for courses...

I'm sure the way you have written your name that you are one of the many companies that specialise in SEO - you get extra points and approved because you have not written some horrendous, totally unrelated comment :) Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to question things.

You are right Russ. If you write naturally the content often optimises itself. I have found that you tend to get less effective results when you try too hard.

Your post makes a lot of great points, but I often get tired of trying to explain SEO in order to teach people to write for optimization. There are lots of great writers out there who can't write SEO at all, and there are lots of crappy writers who properly optimize their garbage. I think if you write truly high quality content, it's likely to at least partially optimize itself. Ultimately, you don't need to know much about SEO in order to write highly optimized articles. I have a very simple strategy that I have been using quite successfully that I would like to share with you here: http://www.contentforconversions.com/article-writing-tips-how-to-write-seo-articles-right/

It's a simple SEO article writing strategy, but it has brought us great success here for our own needs and the needs of our clients. Thanks for the post and keep up the great content.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the great advice regarding article writing. Article writing, quite often, can seem like a very burdensome endeavor, especially for those with start-up Internet businesses. Fresh content is so vitally important yet many seem to struggle to produce the content they need. I am going to pass on your advice to several of my clients knowing that they will benefit from your insight and experience.

Thanks,

Geo.

Pinging is basically using a tool to notify other services that your blog (or website, feed, podcast etc) has new information.

If you use Wordpress, look in settings > writing > update services and you will likely see http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ as it comes as standard.
Now, the problem with this is WP will notify pingomatic with EVERY change you do on your blog. Eventually it becomes ineffective.

Some people will advise to add additional services, so you have a whole list of ping services going on. Theres 2 problems with this method
1. It slows down your blog after every change
2. You are spamming pings and they will eventually become ineffective.

I personally prefer to manually ping, using a service like feed shark, pingoat or ping-o-matic There are lots of services out there, see which one matches your site type best.

Additionally I have the Google XML Sitemaps plugin which notifies Google, Bing and Ask (and Yahoo if you have an ap key) each time you post.

Hope that helps :)

If you read the article here, keyword density has very little importance, certainly not the level most Internet marketers say it does. Put away the calculator and write naturally :)
